Over the many years we have been assisting veterans and surviving spouses, we have met people from all walks of life. One of the veterans from Georgia, who we have been helping the last couple of years, visited us last week. While talking to him I asked him what he did in the Marines. He told me he was a boxer for several years while serving. When I asked him if he was a good one, he pulled out a folder that showed he was on the USA Olympic team representing our country during the 1992 games.  He also produced a picture of his team that was taken in the White House with the Vice President.  It looks to me like we do have the best job in town being able to serve our veterans and their families.

We are immensely proud to say that one of our veterans who we had helped with his VA claims, the late Lyndol Wilson or Chicken Hawk as we called him, is being inducted into the Oklahoma Military Hall.  As a Marine who earned a Silver Star and Purple Heart while serving with the 5th Marines during the Battle of Hue City, we are happy to see him recognized for his military service.

We continue to work to be able to assist most veterans electronically with their applications for VA benefits.  We know that some of those without access to the internet will still need to visit us in person.  With this pandemic continuing, the number of actual visitors we can accommodate at our facility will be limited.  Currently, we are seeing a few veterans and surviving spouses on a priority basis.  Our priority is surviving spouses since many of them are the most in need of assistance.  The second group is our homeless veterans who have no place to call home or know where their next meal is coming from.  The next group will be veterans over 70 who have never filed a claim before and in need of assistance with VA pension or disability benefits.

We will continue accepting claims that are mailed to our PO Box 592 Washington, Oklahoma 73093 address. If you are a new client and need to send your claim by mail, please visit our website at www.DKGVF.org/new and fill out an intake sheet and a list of your disabilities currently rated by VA or have been denied. Also, include a copy of your DD-214, a completed VA Form 21- 22A signed 2x, and a VA Form 21-0966 signed 1x.

BY THE NUMBERS

Last week 21 veterans received a disability rating of 100% for their service-connected disabilities. These veterans will also be eligible for the state benefits of sales tax exemptions, property tax exemptions, and other services that our state provides for disabled veterans. 40 veterans were awarded disability ratings from 10% to 90. This group of men and women will be eligible for VA Health Care, and some of them may also be eligible for other state benefits. 1 surviving spouse was awarded benefits.

GIVING

If you would like to help us make a difference, we welcome your support. We spend over $30,000 each month in direct support of the veterans and family members we serve. We transport many homeless veterans to our Norman location each week to help make a difference in the lives of the men and women who have served in the military.

As you know, we are a 501 (c) 3 non-profit and are wholly dependent on donations from the people we serve and local grants. A government entity does not fund us; all the funds it takes to operate our facility and assist veterans with medical testing. Other expenses come in the form of grants from local companies or other veterans. For those who would like to support the program, your gifts are always appreciated and may be tax-deductible. You can also support us by purchasing items from our Amazon charity list to stock our food pantry and shop AmazonSmile with us as the charity – we will receive .5% of your eligible purchases.

If you are interested in including us in a gift, please contact us at 405-550-8806, ext. 101. Monetary donations can be made online or mailed to PO Box 592, Washington, OK, 73093.
