Nathan Lubbers, United States Army Veteran

Dale K Graham Veterans Foundation

Happy Veterans Day to all of you who served.  We appreciate your commitment, your bravery and your honor to our country.

The Foundation is excited to partner with the Oklahoma Dental Foundation in providing free dental care to our veterans this week through November 15th. They will be bringing their mobile clinic and will see patients from 9 am-4 pm. Please call Lora Malone 405-550-8806 extension 101 to schedule an appointment.

Our Veteran of the week, Mr. Nathan Lubbers served in the United States Army.  He makes his home in Oklahoma City.  Thank you, Mr. Lubbers for your service and sacrifice.  We appreciate you greatly.

We will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and the full week of Christmas so our volunteers can spend time with their families.

As this end of this year draws closer, we are on schedule to reach the goals we set at the beginning of January.  One of the most important has been to do help one thousand veterans receive a 100% rating for their service-connected disabilities.  It looks like we are going to surpass that by 100-150 veterans who will be awarded that percentage this year. We are averaging from 20-30 each week who receive that rating.  When a veteran receives a disability rating for a service-connected disability, it will range from ten percent to one hundred percent depending on what the disability is and the severity. A veteran who receives a 10% rating will receive about $135 per month, while a veteran who has a 100% disability rating will receive close to $3,000 each month.  For those who would like to review the compensation rates for disabled veterans, they are available on the VA website at

Last week, 32 veterans were awarded a 100% rating for their service-connected disabilities.  That group of men and women veterans will receive an annual combined amount of $1,280,544 per year.  Those who reside in Oklahoma will also be eligible to receive the property tax exemption on their primary residence.  Our state also exempts the first $25,000 in sales tax from the veteran’s purchases.  The dependents of veterans who are not retired military dependents may be eligible for the Champ VA medical insurance at no cost.  Dependents of any veteran rated at a permanent 100% may also be eligible to receive education benefits of over $1000 a month.  For more information about any of these types of VA benefits please stop and see us any Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Fifty-one veterans were awarded disability ratings from 10%-90% last week. This group of men and women will receive an annual combined amount of $763,644 per year.  One surviving spouse was awarded benefits and will receive $15, 829 a year based on their spouse’s military service.

I have been writing about the possible VA benefits of some of the Blue Water Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Army, and Coast Guard members who served within twelve miles of shore along the Vietnam Coastline.  The VA is going to start granting some veteran claims along with surviving spouse claims of veterans who were a part of that group.  From what I have learned so far,  the veteran or surviving spouse who previously filed for benefits based on Agent Orange exposure will be required to fill a VA form 20-0995 along with a 21-4138 explaining which ship they were on along with any other evidence they have such as a medical diagnosis or death certificate for the surviving spouse of deceased veterans.  If you fall into this category or know someone who does, please send them our way.

We are a 501-3-C Non-Profit, which means our services are free to everyone who we assist with our services. We operate on donations from individuals, businesses, or grants we receive.  Our budget each month to provide services such as rents, utilities, transportation, and medical expenses for the men and women we assist is over twenty-five thousand dollars.  This equates to over $300,000 per year in services to veterans and their families.  For those of you who want to help us help others, please consider becoming a donor.  Your gifts should be tax-deductible. You can donate directly on our website or mail to PO Box 592 Washington, OK  73093

We have four transportation vans we use to transport veterans to their VA appointments.  Our pantry also has food sacks big enough to feed a family for a week at a time.  These are available to those in our community who are doing without.  We want to do everything possible to make a difference in the lives of the men and women who served our country.

Counselors from the Vet Centers are here each session, and a Legal Aid representative is here on Thursdays.  We have food baskets available for those who qualify.  We look forward to your visit and thank you for trusting us to help you with your VA matters.

We are available every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 1268 North Interstate Drive Norman, OK, 73072.  We open the doors by 5:30 a.m., and we begin working as soon as volunteers have their computers ready.

Visit our website at for more information. There you will find a section on Frequently Asked Questions.  You may also contact us at 405-550-8806 for information or to schedule transportation.

As always, I want to say Thank You to all veterans and their families for their service to the United States of America.

Semper Fi!
