Over the weekend one of our local veterans, Lawrence Mckiddy, contacted me about the dedication of a bridge on Thursday, November 11 at 1 pm a few miles north of Lexington on highway 77. This dedication is in honor of his Marine stepbrother, PFC Tommy W Haley who lost his life in Vietnam on May 13, 1967. He died from wounds received near the Quang Tin Province. Tommy was assigned to the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, M Company as a Rifleman.

I am immensely proud of him and all the men and women who have served or are currently serving in our military. Veterans Day is a time for us to remember and reflect on the young men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. As several of our volunteers are veterans of the Vietnam War, it means a lot to see some of our military brothers and sisters being honored.

As we are continuing to assist more veterans and surviving spouses digitally, an Intake Event is scheduled for November 15th, 2021, from 8am thru 12 pm. By using this type of computer system, we can help them to apply for VA benefits without ever leaving their homes or businesses. Several more volunteers are being trained to help us to alleviate veteran’s claims that have not been processed yet. We will continue to add more volunteers until we have enough trained people to process their claims the same day they are submitted to us.

The 2021 Norman Veterans Day Parade and Memorial Ceremony is November 14th from 2 pm to 4:30 at Reeves Park located at 2501 South Jenkins to honor local veterans and their families. More information is available at the Norman Veterans Day Parade Facebook page. We would like to thank the City of Norman’s Veterans Committee for organizing this incredible event to support our veterans. Check out their Facebook page below for more details on the parade!
