Jimmy Arnold, Korean War Veteran
Dale K. Graham Veterans Foundation
Our Veteran of the week, Mr. Jimmy Arnold visited us last week for the first time to file his claim for benefits. Mr. Arnold served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He makes his home in Iowa Park, Texas. We presented him new cap representing his military service. We introduced Mr. Arnold to our volunteers and visitors where he received a round of applause and a thank you for his Honorable Military Service to this Great Nation.
We have handicapped items available at no charge to veterans or their family members. We accept wheelchairs both electric and manual, scooters, hospital beds and other types of small equipment we can give to veterans. We also accept the donation of cars, trucks, vans, tractors, motorcycles and other items that can be given to veterans or sold to raise funds. For those of you who are looking for a Ford 7.3 Power Stroke engine with automatic transmission we have a 2000 model van that is for sale for $1500. It runs well and has 175000 miles.
Over the years, we have met thousands of people who served this nation’s military who have reached a point in their lives where they are no longer able work to support themselves and their families. Without assistance from our volunteers to help them to receive VA benefits, many of them would have died an early death. When veterans and surviving spouses visit us for the first time, we find that some are trying to survive on $500 to $1000 per month. All of us know that it’s almost impossible to even get by on that type of income. As many of you know we have food sacks filled with enough to last a small family a week or so. These are available to those who are in need.
Each week we are assisting veterans and surviving spouses with the cost of medical testing, rents, utilities, and other unforeseen expenses we all have at one time or another. On an average week, that amounts to five or six thousand dollars for us to provide those services. We also have from two to three vans transporting veterans each day to their VA medical appointments or our location for help with their VA claims and questions. Our drivers have consistently been logging around 1,000 miles each week. Last week was no exception; they spent 73 hours transporting 26 veterans 1,212 miles.
We are a 501-3-C Non-Profit and rely on your donations and grants to provide the services that so many who served in the military need. One of the things that make all we do worthwhile is to see the men and women who become so emotional after they receive approval for VA Benefits with tears of joy streaming down their faces. If you wonder where your next meal will come from or how to pay the rent, then you will know what VA benefits mean to someone.
Twenty-four veterans received a 100% rating for their service-connected disabilities. These men and women will receive a combined annual amount of $1,044,345 per year. Sixty-seven veterans were approved for disability ratings from 10% to 90% for their service-connected disabilities and will receive an annual combined amount of $1,534,640. Two surviving spouses received approval for either DIC, Pension or Aid and Attendance. This group will receive a combined amount of $31,657. Our goal is to make a difference in the lives of the men and women who wore the uniform of a Member of the United States Military.
Counselors from the Vet Centers are here each session, and a Legal Aid representative is here on Thursdays. We have food baskets available for those who qualify. We look forward to your visit and thank you for trusting us to help you with your VA matters.
We are available every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 1268 North Interstate Drive Norman, OK 73072. We open the doors by 5:30 a.m., and we begin working as soon as volunteers have their computers ready. Our line starts as early as 4 a.m.
