Congratulations to our veteran of the week, World War II veteran, Mr. Dewey Muirhead of Wewoka, Oklahoma. Dewey and his wife Inez recently celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary. During his service in the European theater, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Dewey worked as a driller in the oilfield industry. Over ten years ago, I met Dewey and Inez when they asked me to help them with their VA claims for benefits. I call them anytime I visit Wewoka. As their friends are aware of, Inez makes great fried chicken! Thank you for your service Dewey and to Inez, thank you for supporting your veteran!

Each day this pandemic continues, all our volunteers are praying that we can get back to our mission. We want to open our doors to all veterans and their families and be able to assist them with their applications for the VA benefits they are eligible to receive. When I think about the tens of thousands of veterans who we have helped over the years, it’s hard to believe that we have helped so many of them. While we have been closed, our work has not stopped, we are continuing to assist veterans by mail daily. One of the things our board of directors has been working on is to move this organization into the digital age. We believe that with the new procedures and new equipment, we will be able to improve our claims application process both in time and accuracy. Currently, we are mailing or faxing veterans and surviving spouses. But soon, with new technology, we will be able to upload these same claims directly into the VA computer system, which will speed up the process tremendously.

We are looking forward to improving our way of providing services to the men and women who have served this great nation in the military. We do not have a date to open back up or a decision on how we will register people for appointments. Believe me, we are doing everything we can to open our facility to our veterans and their families.

MAILING YOUR CLAIMS
When you are mailing us your DBQ’s or other types of medical evidence, please include a photocopy of your DD-214, a copy of your last percentage letter from the VA, and the 2 forms located on our website. Please include all these items in one envelope when you mail to us.

If you have been denied for any claim prior, also send a copy of the denial letter from the VA.  When needed, we may call clients to gather additional information.  Our mailing address is PO Box 592, Washington, OK 73093.

IMPORTANT: it is imperative that clients mail us complete packets rather than sending partial information in more than one mailing. Going forward, incomplete packets will be mailed back to clients with instructions on next steps.

BY THE NUMBERS
Last week 20 veterans received a disability rating of 100% for their service-connected disabilities.  These veterans will also be eligible for the state benefits of sales tax exemptions, property tax exemptions, and other benefits that our state provides for disabled veterans.

34 veterans were awarded disability ratings from 10% to 90. This group of men and women will be eligible for VA Health Care, and some of them may also be eligible for other state benefits.  2 surviving spouse was also awarded benefits.

GIVING
If you would like to help us make a difference, we welcome your support. We spend over $30,000 each month in direct support of the veterans and family members we serve. We transport many homeless veterans to our Norman location each week to help make a difference in the lives of the men and women who have served in the military.

As you know, we are a 501 (c) 3 non-profit and are wholly dependent on donations from the people we serve and local grants. We are not funded by a government entity, all the funds it takes to operate our facility and to assist veterans with medical testing, and other expenses come in the form of grants from local companies or other veterans.

For those of you who would like to support the program, your gifts are always appreciated and may be tax-exempt. You can shop items from our Amazon charity list to stock our food pantry and shop AmazonSmile with us as the charity – we will receive .5% of your eligible purchases.

If you are interested in including us in a gift, please contact Lora at 405-550-8806, ext. 101. Monetary donations can be made online or mailed to PO Box 592, Washington, OK, 73093.
